Homeowners insurance and foundation repair in Texas

Usually not by default. What Texas sources say, and how to check your own policy.

Foundation repair is expensive enough that the first question is often whether insurance will pay. The short answer from Texas sources: usually not by default, but it depends on your policy and on what caused the damage.

What the Texas Department of Insurance says

TDI's home insurance guide, updated June 1, 2026, lists "damage to foundations or slabs" among the coverages insurers offer as endorsements, which are add-ons to a basic policy. The same guide lists wear and tear, and continuous water leaks, among things policies typically exclude. TDI's comparison worksheet includes a line asking whether a policy covers damage to the foundation or slab, which suggests it's worth comparing when you shop.

What NerdWallet says

NerdWallet's February 2026 cost guide says homeowners insurance generally doesn't cover foundation damage from normal wear. It notes coverage can apply when a covered event causes it, giving burst pipes as an example, and that some disasters need separate policies.

Check your own policy

  1. Find the declarations page and look for any foundation or slab endorsement.
  2. Read the exclusions for settling, cracking, wear and tear, and water leaks.
  3. If a plumbing leak is involved, ask the insurer how it treats the leak itself and any damage it caused.
  4. Get a written answer before work starts.

TDI's consumer help line is 800-252-3439 if you have questions about your policy or a claim.
